Tyler Childers and his band the Food Stamps will hit the road next spring on the “Mule Pull ’24 Tour.”
The North American leg of the trek launches April 5 at the Viejas Arena in San Diego and wraps with a big gig May 29 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Childers will receive support from a variety of artists on select dates throughout the tour, including Medium Build, Hayes Carll, 49 Winchester, Allison Russell, and Sylvan Esso.
The tour announcement comes a few days before Childers releases his new album, Rustin’ in the Rain, out this Friday, Sept. 8. The LP features guest appearances from artists like Margo Price, S.G. Goodman, Erin Rae, and the Travelin’ McCourys. And while Rustin’ in the Rain boasts a mere seven songs, it does follow Childers’ 2022 triple album, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? (In a new interview with The New York Times, Childers says he’s counting down on his track lists, so presumably his next album will have just a half dozen songs.)
Rustin’ in the Rain includes Childers’ recent single, “In Your Love.” Back in July, Childers shared a music video for the track, which chronicles the romance between two male coalminers in 1950s Appalachia. The story was crafted by Silas House, the Poet Laureate of Kentucky, who spoke with Rolling Stone about coming up with the treatment for the video — and the groundbreaking narrative it told.
“[Childers] said he would like to have it be a gay love story, mainly because his first cousin who’s like a brother to him is gay, and he wanted him to see himself in a country music video,” House said. “When he said that, I just thought, ‘So many other people have never seen themselves in a country music video. This would be pretty incredible, to have that kind of representation.’”
Presale tickets will be available starting next Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. local time through 10 p.m. local time, with a general on-sale scheduled for Sept. 15 at 9 a.m. local time. (General on-sale for Childers’ show in Knoxville, Tennessee will begin Sept. 15 at 12 p.m. local time). Registration for access to presale tickets is open now. Full info is available on Childers’ website.
