UNLV Campus Shooting: 3 Dead, 1 Injured

The suspect was reportedly a professor who unsuccessfully sought a job at the school

Three people were killed after a gunman opened fire on Wednesday on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus, AP reported. A fourth person who was injured was in stable condition and transferred to a hospital.

The gunman gunman died during a shootout with police, according to authorities. The suspect was a professor who unsuccessfully sought a job at the school, a law enforcement official told the outlet. According to the official, the suspect had worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina.

“Today is a tragic day for UNLV. It is with the utmost sadness and grief that I am writing to you about a shooting that took place late this morning on our campus — our home,” the university’s President Keith E. Whitfield said in a statement. “We’re all still in shock as we process the unfathomable event.”

Whitfield continued, “We will forever remember and honor those we have lost and who were injured. I’m grieving for the victims of today’s senseless shooting, and my heart breaks for the many students, faculty, staff, parents, loved ones, and community members who suffered through hours of painful uncertainty while officers ensured that our campus was safe and secure again.”

Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told the New York Times that police are aware of the suspect’s identity but would not release the information until later. McMahill did not immediately provide any details about a motive. The shooter was roughly 60 years old, per the Times.

The most recent shooting in America sent shockwaves through the city still reeling from the aftermath of the 2017 mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest music festival that killed 58 people and injured more than 850.
