Jamal Roberts reached a moment many people dream of when he won Season 23 of American Idol back in May. Since then, the singer has opened up about the changes in his life. In addition to new horizons, he also discussed things he had to leave behind.
Jamal Roberts Was The Winner Of Season 23 Of American Idol
Many viewers were introduced to Roberts after he first appeared during the 23rd season of American Idol. He ultimately proved to be the season’s winner, with John Foster as the runner-up and Breanna Nix taking third place.
That said, this wasn’t his first time appearing on a musical reality show. He previously appeared on the BET gospel-themed series Sunday Best.

Since his American Idol win, Roberts has seen a few changes in his life. Prior to appearing on the show, he worked at an elementary school as a physical education coach in Mississippi.
Roberts recently spoke with Billboard, sharing that he thought his life wouldn’t change too much. As he felt, “My life has changed drastically. I went home and thought I could do the same thing I was doing before I left and I found that to be a lie.”
Touching on his teaching background, Roberts shared, “The first day I went back to school after winning Idol, people were coming up to the school [to see me] and I thought, ‘This won’t work.’ So I had to make that ultimate decision. As an employee, I had to leave, but I still show up and volunteer all the time because this is where my passion is and my heart is, as well as music.”
“But America voted for me, so they expect to see something. They expect me to put in a little more work and I have the work ethic and I’m ready.”

“That was a wonderful experience. I got to meet a lot of people I looked up to and for all of them to embrace me, it felt amazing. And now I’ve just been added to the [“The Boy Is Mine”] tour with Monica and Brandy and Muni Long and Kelly Rowland. It starts in October.”

That said, Roberts hasn’t forgotten where he came from. His first post-Idol single, an emotional, biographical piece, is named after his home-state, “Mississippi.”
