Prequel Series ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Has Been Cancelled After One Season

So this is a weird one. Five months after Showtime announced that “Dexter: Original Sin” had been renewed for a second season, the spinoff prequel series has now been cancelled after just one season. Variety reports this afternoon, “Variety has learned from sources that Paramount has opted not to move forward with another season of the prequel series.”

“A Season 2 renewal announcement went out in April,” the site’s exclusive report goes on to explain, “but sources say the series has in fact been on hiatus and no plans to shoot a second season had moved forward and no production dates were scheduled.”

Showtime went all in on “Dexter” with “Original Sin” and sequel series “Dexter: Resurrection,” the latter of which seemingly will be returning for a second season. According to Variety, “Paramount is imminently planning to open a writers room for a potential Season 2.”

“Dexter: Original Sin” was set in 1991 Miami and revolved around Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he goes from student to avenging serial killer. With guidance from his father, Harry (Christian Slater), the killer-in-training adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people without being discovered by law enforcement at the same time as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department. Michael C. Hall returned as the inner voice of Dexter.

The pivot here seems to be to focus on Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan in the present day going forward, streamlining the “Dexter” Universe down to just one series rather than two.

Stay tuned for more on all things “Dexter.”
