Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 Ends on a Shocking Cliffhanger, But What’s The Point With Only One Episode Left?

    Critic’s Rating: 4.5 / 5.0

    4.5

    Deep breaths, everyone.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 is the next-to-last episode of the short-lived medical drama, which means it has to begin wrapping things up.

But while one story is finally over, the series opened a new one despite how little time remains to develop it.

    (Pief Weyman/NBC)

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 Offered a Fascinating Case

The case was one of the best Brilliant Minds has offered, with an imaginative, frightened, and very ill teenager needing brain surgery but unable to tolerate the idea of anesthesia.

It is so easy to fall into the trap of making a character like Finn a caricature. He wasn’t like most young people, nor like most patients, and a lesser show would have exploited that.

But Brilliant Minds has never been about making people act “normal” (whatever that means) or centering neuronormativity. That’s one of the things I love best and will miss most — this show is about accepting neurodivergence in all its forms, not turning patients into something they’re not to make people comfortable.

I especially liked the way everyone used Finn’s special interest in writing medieval fantasies to help keep him calm and centered during the surgery.

    (Pief Weyman/NBC)

It’s one thing for Wolf to do unorthodox things like make himself part of a sick kid’s imaginary world, but it’s another for Nichols to go along with what appears to him to be a delusion.

Nichols wanted to do a traditional surgery. He didn’t think Wolf’s plan was safe or prudent, and he was considering that more than the kid’s unique psychological needs.

So, knighting Finn with his scalpel before the surgery was more than an unusual medical practice. It was Nichols’ tacit acknowledgment that Wolf had the right idea here and his attempt to understand and accept the way Finn sees the world.

That was one of my top ten Nichols scenes, at least on Brilliant Minds Season 2.

It’s not often that Nichols is able to let go of his preconceived notions about what constitutes proper medical practice, so doing so here was a real victory for him.

    (Pief Weyman/NBC)

That scene almost made up for the fact that, with one episode left, Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 was still indulging this ridiculous love triangle.

Look, it was one thing when Wolf was so preoccupied with his father’s reappearance that he stood Nichols up. Of course Nichols would consider moving on from someone who didn’t have room for him in his life.

I will never forgive Brilliant Minds Season 2 for not following up on that thread properly, though. They threw that fantastic setup in the trash and ruined the first half of the season.

Anyway, now there is so little time left that I have less patience than usual with this Beau/Nichols/Wolf love triangle, and I don’t like those kinds of stories in the first place.

Beau already told Nichols that he doesn’t think Nichols is committed enough to him, and Nichols didn’t dispute that he wasn’t sure he loved Beau.

    (Pief Weyman/NBC)

In my mind, that should be the end of that. I mean, who wants to be with someone who is half with someone else?

If Brilliant Minds wanted to drag things out til the very end so we can have a sweet Nichols/Wolf reunion, that’s fine, but take Beau out of the middle of it!

Nichols’ conflict should be solely with himself. The relationship with Beau should be over for good, forcing Nichols to choose between staying single and admitting his feelings for Wolf.

Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 didn’t feel like it built on the previous episode’s developments in this area. It was like Beau’s decision, and the dinner party didn’t happen, and Nichols was still trapped between two guys.

Meanwhile, I’m Glad Amelia Fredericks Is Finally Gone, Even If It Was Rushed

    (Pief Weyman/NBC)

If Brilliant Minds had gotten a third season, Dana’s investigation of Amelia Fredericks would likely have been a front-burner story that left off on a cliffhanger and came back next year to resolve.

Sadly, that wasn’t to be, so the story had to be finished almost as soon as it began.

That’s why Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 wrapped up this story and got Amelia fired almost as soon as Dana began investigating her activities.

It was a bit of a coincidence that Dr. Adler was fired almost as soon as Dana needed his testimony, and the part where all that some of Amelia’s patients needed in order to testify on the record was a gentle nudge was definitely rushed and unrealistic.

I’d much rather Dana had been investigating all season than the flash-forwards we kept getting treated to of Wolf locked up in Hudson Oaks. Those types of flash-forward mysteries that worked so well on This Is Us utterly failed here, leaving viewers confused enough to stop watching.

    (Pief Weyman/NBC)

Still, the rushed conclusion of this story was better than nothing. Dana demonstrated her ability to stand up for patients in the way only she could, even if this story competed with her girlfriend randomly breaking up with her.

The only wrinkle I didn’t appreciate was the Sophia reveal.

After all the time invested in establishing that Sophia was a hallucination, Brilliant Minds decided to imitate Watson and have the hallucination turn out to be a real person as well.

Both shows did this during the penultimate episode, and I don’t get it.

It’s pointless to offer the type of twist that could be an entire season’s arc with one episode to go. Watson had a lackluster series finale that left me utterly disappointed; please tell me that Brilliant Minds isn’t gearing up to do the same thing!

    (Pief Weyman/NBC)

How well do you think Brilliant Minds Season 2 Episode 19 set things up for the series finale?
