Megan Is Missing has quietly returned, and you might have already stumbled across pieces of it while scrolling.
Writer-director Michael Goiis continuing the story with Megan Is Missing: Evil Never Dies, a feature-length vertical seriesthat has been revealing itself through episodes and teasers posted by Goi, cast members, and influencers across Instagram and TikTok.
Now, Dread Central can exclusively share a preview assembled from scenes across the final five episodes. The full series, including its finale, is now streaming on the official See Megan Is Missing Instagram account, which unlocked today, Friday, October 30, at 11 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. ET.
The release is happening entirely through Instagram and TikTok, with no other distribution platforms planned.
“For years, people have asked me to continue the story of Megan Is Missing. But it never seemed to be the right time. Until now,” Goi tells Dread Central.
“Megan Is Missing: Evil Never Dies gives me the opportunity to use the vertical format in ways that increase the audience’s proximity to the terror they are seeing. It brings them closer to disturbing events and makes them part of what is happening to the characters.”
Spoilers for the original film and the new series’ setup below.
This time, the nightmare reaches beyond Megan and Amy to the actresses who played them. Rachel Quinn and Amber Perkins return as fictionalized versions of themselves, with the original film’s cast invited onto a podcast by someone who has murdered the actual host and assumed his identity.
His intention is to murder the actors, believing they should have died in real life.
That context puts a very different spin on the footage below. This is a compilation of moments from the final five episodes, rather than one continuous scene. And while the imagery recalls the original’s notorious conclusion, we shouldn’t assume we’re watching someone uncover Megan and Amy’s burial site.
For anyone who needs the reminder: Megan’s body is already inside the barrel when Amy is forced into it in the original film. Here, Quinn and Perkins are playing themselves, making their characters’ fates the basis for an entirely new threat.
We first reported on the vertical production in March, after IATSE revealed that Goi had filmed the series in Los Angeles. The rollout has since been letting viewers discover fragments of the story across different accounts before bringing it all together.
It’s a fitting approach for a follow-up to a movie that found an entirely new audience through social media. The 2011 original follows a teenage girl’s disappearance after meeting someone online and her best friend’s efforts to find her. When it went viral on TikTok in 2020, Goi posted a warning for unsuspecting viewers about just how disturbing the film becomes. This time, social media is where the story itself is being told.
