Befriend the midi-skirt for an effortless approach to seasonal transitions.
Wind, rain, snow and sun all in the same week? Yup, March has arrived — and it’s up to its usual madness. So, how do you navigate these weather inconsistencies while keeping your style sanity? Look to the midi-skirt for your answer. While it’s taken a back seat over the last few years, it came back with a vengeance for Spring 2024, with Prada leading the charge, followed by Dior, Marc Jacobs, Fendi and more.
But besides the undeniable “It” factor, these mid-length bottoms are surprisingly versatile. When worn with tights, a midi-skirt can keep you quite warm and when you inevitably overheat (because the temperature is very, er, temperamental), you’ll be appreciative of the access to airflow.
If you still aren’t team #midi-skirt, we’ve complied a few weatherproof suggestions below.
The pleated midi-skirt
Not ready to bring out all your pastels yet? No problem. Grey is actually the perfect accoutrement to tone down any of your spring-y hues. Paired with an oversized blazer and midi-skirt, and this outfit can work in almost any weather.
Ganni Grey Drapey Melange Fitted Blazer
If the Fall and Spring 2024 runways are any indication, it’s all about that waist! Show off your curves with this viral Ganni blazer.
COS Pleated Knitted Maxi Skirt
Don’t be afraid of this bold hue! Yellow can be the ultimate style statement when styled intentionally. Tone it down with neutrals and your midi-skirt will provide just the right amount of pop.
Charles & Keith Pointed-Toe Wedge Ankle Boots
Wedges? Is it 2002? Apparently it is, as wedges are due to make a big comeback this spring. If you aren’t mentally ready to go full boho chic, start with a mod wedge bootie like these ones from Charles & Keith.
The embellished midi-skirt
If you live in Canada, it’s sweater weather 360 days a year. So if you’re prone to overheating when the temperature suddenly rises, a cropped sweater and midi-skirt will help balance you out. Consider this head-to-toe Prada look as your go-to guide.
Uniqlo 3D Knit Cotton Long Sleeve Sweater
Cozy, comfortable and chic? Say less! Don’t blame us if this Uniqlo sweater becomes a closet favourite. And did we mention it comes in three other colours?
Sachin & Babi Pyaar Skirt
Why let dresses have all the fun? Add some drama to your everyday with this embellished midi-skirt. Maybe just don’t wear it to any weddings, unless you want to quote Kelly Kapoor from The Office.
Prada Arqué Leather Mini Shoulder Bag
Black accessories never fail when it comes to transitional dressing. This Prada mini bag has an adjustable handle so you can sport it over your shoulder or carry it in your hands, depending on what the situation calls for.
The knit midi-skirt
Bedazzled knitwear? Yes it’s a thing and it should be inspo for your next dinner party. When it’s dark and stormy outside, cozy up in a stretchy matching set and look fabulous while doing it. Bonus points for a monochromatic look.
Self-Portrait Sequined Cropped Cardigan
Afraid of looking too formal? We could argue that any occasion could call for sequins but the good thing about this cardigan from Self-Portrait is that it can be removed at any time. Wear a cute cami underneath and you got options for wherever the night takes you.
Dior 30Montaigne B3U sunglasses
What do you call it when it’s too bright to wear full sunnies but not dark enough to go sans glasses? Enter these ombré lilac shades by Dior. They’ll shield your eyes just enough so that you can still see, but aren’t blinded.
Galvan Delia Scalloped Skirt
Our favourite midi-skirt will always be the one with a stretchy waistband. This one from UK label Galvan is made from 88 per cent recycled glossy viscose and comes in multiple colours if lilac isn’t your thing — though it should be!
The cargo midi-skirt
Not everyone is a skirt girlie so for those on the fence, the cargo midi-skirt is your answer. Depending on the temperature, you can accessorize it with a dad cap or a beanie and both will be appropriate. For more of a preppy vibe, add a collar underneath your favourite wooly jumper.
Aritzia Babaton Observer Cargo Skirt
You can’t put this midi-skirt in a box! One part pencil, one part cargo, equal parts stylish, this midi-skirt from Aritzia puts a fun spin on a classic and is a great addition to your winter to spring transitional wardrobe.
H&M Zip-up Cardigan
Transitional dressing means you need options. Enter the zip-up cardigan. On cooler days, pair one with a T-shirt underneath for extra warmth. And once it gets warmer, it’ll be great on it’s own. Win-win!
