Ana Gasteyer of Saturday Night Live fame recently recounted what happened when Sean “Diddy” Combs arrived on set as the episode’s musical guest. This came up during the comedian’s recent appearance on a podcast. She also revealed how the cast and crew poked fun at the mogul.
The Cast & Crew Weren’t Too Happy With Diddy’s Behavior
Gasteyer is known for appearing on Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2002. Over the years, she has appeared in a variety of sitcoms, like Suburgatory and American Auto. She is also known for appearing in the film, Mean Girls.
This past Wednesday, Gasteyer appeared on the “Las Culturistas” podcast, which is hosted by SNL cast-member Bowen Yang and comedian Matt Rogers. While there, she discussed an appearance Diddy made back in May 1998.
According to Gasteyer, Combs “shut down like the whole building” during his appearance. As she continued, “You can tell the five a——- in the six years that I was there when they would be like, ‘So and so is in the building, everybody stay in your dressing rooms!’”
Gasteyer didn’t agree with that line of thinking. As she put it, “[It] is applicable if you’re a presidential candidate. But apart from that, really it’s my house.”
On the show, Diddy performed “Come With Me.” He was accompanied by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and a 40-piece orchestra. Notably, the song also samples Led Zeppelin’s song “Kashmir.”
Will Ferrell Helped The Crew Get Back At Diddy
Reportedly, Diddy’s demands weren’t appreciated by other members of the staff. In fact, they actually came up with a way to retaliate. As Gasteyer revealed, during a writer’s room meeting, it was suggested that cast-member Will Ferrell break into Diddy’s closed set while dressed like his character Ron from the “Mango” sketches.
Gasteyer shared that, “They were like, ‘Wouldn’t it be so funny if Ron just went in?’ And he did. He went on down the stairs and he marched right in.” Gasteyer even claimed she had a video “from the control room where Sean Combs is rapping [during rehearsal] and Ron is walking around looking really disoriented.”
The SNL alum shared it was “the greatest thing that’s ever happened,” She revealed that Diddy himself “did not roll with it,” saying it made him “very uncomfortable.”
As noted by Us Weekly, Ferrell himself has also previously talked about the story. He previously shared the story as part of “SNL Stories from the Show,” on the Saturday Night Live YouTube channel. “There was one moment where we were in this writers room watching Puff Daddy rehearse, and someone said, ‘Ron should go up onstage,’ and before everyone turned to see, I had sprinted out the door.”
In the end, Gasteyer felt that Diddy’s behavior reflected his “artifice of that faux importance.”. She also mused, “Like, what’s gonna happen? You’re gonna walk into the studio and you’re gonna be, like, ‘I’m in the studio. I work here.’”
