Late last year, Netflix made the surprise announcement that the Fede Alvarez-produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic, will be slicing its way onto the streaming service on February 18, 2022, and we’ve since been provided with a teaser trailer and a couple of images. Today brings a new image, and it’s particularly exciting. I’ll be honest. I hate setting New Year’s resolutions, especially concrete ones. Like, people are here resolving to make home-cooked meals three times a week, write a novel, become an astronaut…what are they thinking?! Sometimes I’ll give myself an extremely general guideline, like “do more of X” or “be less Y,” but otherwise I’m not a fan and don’t participate in the practice. And I definitely don’t give myself reading resolutions because I’ve never even successfully accomplished a “wouldn’t it be nice” non-goal, and I don’t need that negativity tearing me down. Funnily, this preference is actually pretty at odds…

When you’re a baby, books aren’t just books. Books can also be play toys, chew toys, and occasionally even bath toys, which means that keeping books intact can be quite the challenge for parents and caregivers. As part of developing early literacy skills, it’s important that the youngest of readers can interact with and enjoy books as objects. Even if a child isn’t using a book traditionally, just their awareness of books as entertaining objects will help set them up for future success in reading. Additionally, books specially made to be indestructible baby books can also serve as teething toys…

Winter is perfect for snuggling up in your snuggliest blanket and settling down with a great comic. And while most of us have our favourite reading spot (and will fight for it to the death), finding the right comfies to go with it can be a little tricky. I love my book-related blankets and I love my book-related pyjamas. But comic book related bedding can be a bit limited.  Comic books still have a tendency to be associated with kids. Now, you know and I know comic books are for everyone, and there are some comics that are absolutely not…

You know the social media trend where an author or fan drops some emoji-filled bullet points about tropes or other elements in forthcoming books? I have complex feelings about those. On the one hand, I don’t love this reductive approach to books. Books are more than just collections of tropes, and plenty of authors can make me love a trope I usually avoid. Moreover, just because a trope is present doesn’t mean I will automatically enjoy the book. But at least when I see a bullet point claiming a book is a slow burn, I know what I’m getting into.…

In 2022, don’t anticipate that book challenges and wide-ranging censorship of books will slow down across the U.S. They’ll be amplifying, thanks to right-wing and extremist white supremacist groups like No Left Turn, Moms for Liberty, and dozens of state-based organizations, as well as dark money. State governments are packed with representatives who are being supported by these groups, as well as dark money, and by listening to these constituencies, many politicians are sponsoring bills with an anti–critical race theory (CRT) agenda. They’re also targeting school curriculum, demanding transparency over books purchased for libraries and those purchased for individual classrooms…

Prison censorship is nothing new, and with ever-shifting regulations about what books can and cannot be donated to libraries and individuals who are incarcerated, even organizations with the mission of getting books into those places are finding themselves surprised. South Central Correctional Facility (SCCF), a private prison managed by the Tennessee-based CoreCivic, rejected a donation from Books to Prisoners. Three books were sent back to the organization by SCFF, including a children’s biography of Malcolm X titled Malcolm X: By Any Means Necessary, written by Walter Dean Myers. The book had been requested by an individual inside the facility and…

One of the key findings from a new study by the Pew Research Center shows that 30% of Americans now read ebooks, up from 25% in 2019.
