But what exactly are primers, and how do you find out which one you need? We turned to makeup artist and Smashbox Global Lead Pro Artist Lori Taylor Davis to answer some of our burning questions.

What exactly is a face primer?

“Primers prep your skin to receive makeup, depending on the primer formula they can add moisture, smooth texture, control oil, and, in some instances, brighten skin,” says Davis. They should be used after your skincare, right before makeup. “Face primers are best used or applied after moisturizer and are the last step before you apply all types of foundation.”

How can someone find the best primer for their skin type?

Like skincare, finding the right primer means figuring out what your beauty goals are. “Most primers can be mixed or layered so creating your own primer cocktails helps you customize and create your prefect skin finish,” says Davis. There are primers that work to control oiliness, add a glow, or brighten dull skin. They can even treat skincare concerns. “Primers that double as skincare work double duty to prefect skin immediately and over time.”

How do you use a face primer?

You don’t need to be a makeup artist in training to get a lot out of primers. “Primers really add to any makeup look⁠—they prep skin so your skin and the makeup you apply look better longer,” says Davis. “Face primers are best applied with the fingers, similar to moisturizers. Feeling how much and where the primers are going cuts down on overuse.”
