Is there a chance in hell we will get closure?
It’s been a big year for big guy Ron Perlman. He stars in two must-see films (Don’t Look Up and Nightmare Alley). To support these titles, he sat down with The Independent to talk movies, politics, and a little bit of revisionist history when it comes to Hellboy 3.
Hellboy fans can tell you, we were all anxiously anticipating a third and final chapter in the Guillermo Del Toro series of films. The Ron Perlman films, Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, both earned critical and fan adoration upon release and serious cult followings thereafter. They are the perfect hybrid of action, superhero, comedy, and horror … and many of us were praying we’d eventually get to see the apocalyptic third act promised at the end of the second film.
Unfortunately, we never did get to see a third Hellboy film from Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman. This was in part due to busy schedules and sadly, a lack of studio interest. However, none of this stopped a Hellboy reboot from happening in 2019 starring Stranger Things phenomenon David Harbour. While we here at Dread Central love Harbour and his work, we were still extremely disappointed to see Hollywood take a turn away from del Toro and his incredible two-film arc.
Now friend of the genre Ron Perlman has shared his thoughts on a possible third del Toro instalment.
“Am I eager to do Hellboy 3? No, I’m 71 f***ing years old” he recently told The Independent. He quickly follows by saying “We owe this to the fans and we should give it to them because it would be an epic conclusion. So Guillermo, if you’re reading, I’m not done pounding you to get this f**king thing done.”
Perlman and del Toro have worked together numerous times over the years, and it all started off with a letter the director sent the actor asking him to play Hellboy. Perlman explains: “It was a letter you don’t get very often in life. The type of letter you save and when you have the money, you frame it. Reading the letter, it was like I’d won a lifetime achievement award. I was an obscure character actor behind these masks. Nobody recognized me, let alone knew my name, but he did.”
