Universal and Bluhouse’s M3GAN is off to a good start at the box office. The Blumhouse and Atomic Monster production has done pretty well critically and has done very well with audiences. On Friday night, the killer doll flick brought in $11.7 million. The film’s three-day forecast is looking promising with a total of a potential $27.5 million.
TikTok has pretty much made up for forty percent of the film’s advertisements. The platform blew up with fans attempting to imitate the M3GAN dance. Sadly, the actual dance number in the film isn’t set to a millennial jam nor is it very long or satisfying. What you see in the trailer is pretty much what you get in the film.
The synopsis for M3GAN goes like this:
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a lifelike doll that’s programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by Gemma, a brilliant roboticist, M3GAN can listen, watch and learn as it plays the role of friend and teacher, playmate and protector. When Gemma becomes the unexpected caretaker of her 8-year-old niece, she decides to give the girl an M3GAN prototype, a decision that leads to unimaginable consequences.
I’m hoping for a sequel that acts as a musical that will see M3GAN sing, dance, kill and come up with even more content for TikTok. I’m half kidding. But, let’s face it. That would do very well at the box office.
All kidding aside, M3GAN managed to bring horror into the spotlight right at the beginning of 2023! Not a bad start for horror! Especially considering how much the genre dominated 2022 in total.
