Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest is a six-part series headed to Netflix that already looks like its going to cook the mind with synth score and neon lights. The trailer is filled from end to end with both. If you recall Refn ushered the comeback for synth and neons. Even going as far as having brands change their fonts and logos to neon pink and orange. Ever since Drive you can see the turn in both film and all pop culture to pain with a neon brush while listening to plenty of synthcore music.
Refn’s previous series, Too Old Too Die Young was promising initially. But, it was crushed under the director’s own prowess. With no other studio standing in the way, the director went into a world where responses to lines of dialogue were only given after waiting 30 seconds in pure silence. The series was also entirely too long. There was a great story in there somewhere. Sadly it was buried under the director’s own ego. At times I felt like it was an experiment in comedy. Part of me still believes that. The director of the all-too-rad, Drive has the capability to do amazing things. Again. I hope that Copenhagen Cowboy ends up being an actual film without the unecessary ego and weight.

The synopsis for Copenhagen Cowboy goes like this:
A thrill-inducing, neon-drenched noir series set across six episodes which follows enigmatic young heroine, Miu. After a lifetime of servitude and on the verge of a new beginning, she traverses the ominous landscape of Copenhagen’s criminal netherworld. Searching for justice and enacting vengeance, she encounters her nemesis, Rakel, as they embark on an odyssey through the natural and the supernatural. The past ultimately transforms and defines their future, as the two women discover they are not alone, they are many.
The trailer truly looks fantastic. As a fan of Only God Forgives and Neon Demon, I hope it is a mix of that and something that is a little more traditional with its noir narrative.
We will be sure to keep you up to date on the release date of Copenhagen Cowboy.
