Del Toro on Netflix

As horror fans, we really can never have too many watchlists. It’s never ending. In an effort to not completely overwhelm you, we’ve gone out of our way to make a few friendly suggestions so you don’t have to add even more horror titles all by your lonesome. Just remember, it’s okay if you don’t get through every movie you have planned to watch this Halloween season. Take a deep breath! There’s always next year (and next month).

Below, please take a gander at a list of just some of the horror movies coming to Netflix and HBO Max this month for your sadistic viewing pleasure. Granted, there are a lot of Scooby Doo movies coming out on both streamers based on this list (via Fangoria). I’m sure some of you are planning a massive mystery van marathon. That’s totally fine.

I’m just going to wax philosophical on a few horror movies I’m planning on watching from this list that I can’t wait to revisit or check out for the very first time.

Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

cabinet of curiosities netflix - Scary New Releases Coming to Netflix and HBO Max in October 2022

Debuting on Netflix on October 25th, this anthology inspired by Guillermo Del Toro’s coffee table book is sure to be on every horror fan’s must-see list. Featuring performances from Crispin Glover, Andrew Lincoln, Ben Barnes, Sofia Boutella, and Essie Davis, the cast represents all aspects of the genre. Del Toro is a master at art direction and atmosphere. So, an anthology seems to be tailor-made for his brand of gothic storytelling. Cabinet of Curiosities should be one of the most-watched shows leading up to Halloween.

Check out the trailer below to get even more excited.

Labyrinth

Labyrinth David Bowie Jennifer Connelly masked ball 1024x576 - Scary New Releases Coming to Netflix and HBO Max in October 2022

I was just lucky enough to watch this 80s horror fantasy classic at an outside screening courtesy of Rocket Cinema. There’s nothing like watching David Bowie sing “Dance Magic Dance” with a rollicking crowd that knows all the lyrics. Seeing it at home again, or for the first time if you’re lucky, is still an amazing experience all on its own. Labyrinth represents the dark side of the 80s when it was still okay to scare your children. This is the perfect kind of gateway horror to introduce your family to a land of imagination that’s still a little bit dangerous.

I’ve been waiting for Key & Peele to get back together. I really can’t imagine a better project for the sketch comedy legends to reunite on. Jordan Peele is now a staple of the horror genre and Keegan Michael-Peele has quietly become one of the best voiceover actors in animation. Henry Selick (Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas) directs this sure-to-be stop-motion classic about two demon brothers forced to face their all-powerful arch-enemy in a battle for the ages. Look for it on Netflix on October 28th.

The Eye

Hitting HBO Max this October, Jessica Alba plays a blind violinist who regains her eyesight through a complicated surgery. In typical body horror fashion, her new transplants start seeing ghostly visions that haunt her every waking moment. A remake of the Pang brothers’ 2002 film from Hong Kong, The Eye represents everything that’s bad and admittedly awesome about the onslaught of Asian horror remakes in the early oughts. It’s a guilty pleasure and also happens to be a great double feature with James Wan’s Malignant.

The Witch

the witch butter live deliciously explained by robert eggers - Scary New Releases Coming to Netflix and HBO Max in October 2022

Really, we should all watch Robert Eggers’ haunting family fairytale every Halloween. The devilish goat Black Phillip is just as much of a horror icon as Art the Clown at this point. The Witch is as close to time travel as a horror movie can get. The entire film seems like it’s set during Samhain. At first glance, it doesn’t seem like a film that should be a Halloween tradition in your homestead. But by the time the transformative ending takes a hold of you, it will feel like a quintessential addition to your favorite all-time October delights.
