Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving is finally moviing forward after years of fans eagerly waiting following that original Grindhouse faux trailer. Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse featured their back-to-back Planet Terror and Death Proof in order to emulate the Grindhouse theaters of yesteryear. However, it also featured some amazing faux trailers by Eli Roth, Edgar Wright and Rob Zombie. Hilariously, Machete Kills actually received the full feature treatment first. Now, Roth’s Thanksgiving is getting the same treatment. Today, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Patrick Dempsey is taking on the role of the town Sheriff in Thanksgiving.
If you recall the sheriff in the faux trailer was played by Terminator and Tombstone’s Micheal Biehn, and while we may still get an appearance by Biehn, the head sheriff is going to be played by Dempsey.
Thanksgiving will follow a series of bizarre murders in a small town by a slasher dressed up as a Pilgrim. The trailer featured the killer going around the town killing many a folks in varying ways. Of course, the big gross-out moment arrives with a human being with his legs pulled behind his head and anus stuffed with all the fixings that make up holiday dressing. It is quite the sight and Roth better not skimp on the true gnarliness of that moment.
It is going to be great to see Roth go back to his small-budget horror roots and once again tackle this genre. Especially to see him go for the big gross-outs once again.
Thanksgiving begins filming in Toronto next month, and we are already dying to see who else is set to star in this one and just how far it is going to go with that Grindhouse dingy, scratched film aesthetic.
We were originally big fans of Grindhouse. We had high hopes that it would become a trend and that every 3-5 years we would see another Grindhouse double feature by two more directors, all produced by Rodriguez and Tarantino of course. So, somewhere in our little hearts we are still hoping that Thanksgiving gets paired with some more faux trailers or maybe even a second film by another director like Eli Roth or Rob Zombie. The original 2007 Grindhouse film did terribly at the boxoffice. Nobody knew what it was and nobody knew “Grindhouse” was. Or at least the vast majority of people didn’t know. I went go see it 3 times on opening weekend. I was in heaven with it. Did anyone else approve? Were there any other fans of the film?
