One of the biggest rumors ahead of the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was that Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool would appear in the film. While that didn’t happen, the film’s writer did note that it was something the team behind the film thought about.

Speaking to ComicBook, screenwriter Michael Waldron — who served as head writer on Loki and also wrote the screenplay for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness — said that the team behind the film did discuss potentially having Deadpool show up in the film somewhere, but it just ended up not working out.

“Yeah, we talked about it,” Waldron said. “I think we talked about everything in this movie. So, [it] would’ve been crazy to not raise that, but it ultimately didn’t feel like the right place. But yeah, of course, we talked about it.”

Reynolds’ Deadpool wasn’t the only character discussed, as Waldron also revealed that the team had considered bringing in Tom Cruise to play a multiverse version of Tony Stark. When it comes to Deadpool, however, fans should expect to see him at some point in the future, as Deadpool 3 is now being written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick from a previous draft by Bob’s Burgers duo Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the return of Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as Dr. Stephen Strange. This time, the Sorcerer Supreme will join Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who finally transformed into the Scarlet Witch during the WandaVision finale.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was directed by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man trilogy) from a script written by Emmy-winning scribe Michael Waldron (Loki).  It is executive produced by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
