A couple of days after announcing the DC Universe’s Chapter One slate, DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has given further details about some of the upcoming projects on Twitter.
First, Gunn tweeted out that though he spoke a great deal about the comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, there were multiple other comics that were serving as inspiration for the beginning of the new DCU.
The four comics Gunn posted are:
- All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely, and Jamie Grant
- The Authority Omnibus by Warren Ellis, Mark Millar, Tom Peyer, Frank Quietly, and Dustin Nguyen
- Batman by Grant Morrison, Andy Kubert, and Tony Daniel
- Absolute Swamp Thing by Alan Moore. Stephen R. Bissette, John Totleben, Rick Veitch, Shawn McManus, and Dan Day
You can check out Gunn’s tweet below to see the covers of each comic.
We’re talked a lot about Woman of Tomorrow, but these are more of the comics inspiring #DCStudios and the new #DCU in these early days. That doesn’t mean we’re adapting all these comics, but that the feel, the look, or the tone of them are touchstones for our team. Check ’em out! pic.twitter.com/34KrVPeEL5

Gunn was then asked about if he’d have Grant Morrison, who wrote two of the four listed comics, contribute to their comic adaptations. The Co-CEO responded by saying he’s friends with Morrison and that the two of them talk.
Grant and I have been friends a long time and we talk.

Another fan said that The Brave and the Bold — the planned Batman and Robin film based on Grant Morrison’s Batman run — will have to be starkly different than 2022’s The Batman. Gunn responded saying no vision for a good film starts with it being “not” something.
I don’t think a vision for any good film starts with being “not” something. It must be fully its own thing, not the shadow (nor the copy) of another work.

Finally, one fan said that they hope to see a talk show starring Weasel, the Sean Gunn-played creature from 2021’s The Suicide Squad, in the DCU. Gunn said, “You might be in luck,” which could be a joke or a genuine hint, given the director’s affinity for weirder characters.
The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.
