Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Will Feature 6 Animation Styles

The original Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a massive success when it premiered in 2018, in part due to its hyper-stylistic animation approach. The upcoming sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, will retain that style, and expand on it in every way.

Speaking to Empire Magazine in a recent interview, producer Phil Lord teases that, while the first film had one very distinct animation style, the sequel — which is broken up into two parts — will have six.

“The first film had one animation style that dominates the movie. This movie has six,” said Lord. “So we’re taking those tools, adding all the things we learned on The Mitchells Vs The Machines, and then growing them further to accommodate the ambition of this movie. Which is to wow you every time you enter a new environment, and also to make sure that the style of the movie reflect the story, and that the images are driven by feelings, as opposed to some egg-headed art project. Which it also is, by the way!”

Fans have already seen a handful of the styles set to appear in the film in some of the latest trailers, which sees Miles Morales taken from his home and pulled into an everchanging world of different styles as he’s pursued by Spider-Man 2099. Just what other animation styles will be featured remain to be seen, though.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will also see Issa Rae’s Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman join Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld in the animated comic book sequel. The two are reprising their roles as Miles Morales/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, respectively. Plot details are being kept under wraps but will reportedly feature multiple Spider-powered characters “across Marvel Comics’ time and space.”

It was announced in April that Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson will serve as the film’s trio of directors. Lord, Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg are all returning to produce the Sony Pictures project, with Alonzo Ruvalcaba co-producing. The original Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey will executive produce, along with Aditya Sood.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced a teenage Miles Morales, who becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat to all realities. The movie won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and grossed $375.5 million at the global box office.
