Speaking to ComicBook.com following his recent appearance on the main stage of D23 Expo during Marvel Studios’ showcase, Duke spoke about M’Baku’s role in the upcoming film and how he must now be less insular following the events of Avengers: Endgame.

“I think M’Baku is forced to catch up with the times,” Duke said. “His role has changed. He survived The Snap, he is now a part of the Tribal Council, so he’s more forward-facing and less insular. So he’s been forced to really be a part of the collective transparency. I think that’s a really cool thing for him and you get to see a whole new dynamic including him.”

Duke went on to say that more of Wakanda will be shown off in the upcoming film before diving back into M’Baku, noting that his character will be looking at things through a much wider lens now.

“He is no longer the insular leader,” said Duke. “he’s learning how to move forward. So he has a very large, wide, macro lens as to what’s happening and I think we get to see more of that and see how much that impacts him.”

“In the film, Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye, and the Dora Milaje fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death,” reads the synopsis. “As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together with the help of War Dog Nakia and Everett Ross and forge a new path for the kingdom of Wakanda.”

Based on the Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will continue to explore the incomparable world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.

It is once again being directed by Ryan Coogler from a screenplay he is co-writing with Joe Robert Cole. It will see the return of most of its original main cast, including Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as M’Baku, and Florence Kasumba as Ayo.
