Questioning The Lesbian Representation in ‘Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings’ [Horror Queers Podcast]

    Identical White Boys

After bouncing all over the place in November with episodes on Knives and Skin, Starship Troopers, Perfect Blue and Addams Family Values, we’re settling into a few weeks of themed ‘Winter Horror’ discussions. Last week was Joel Schumacher’s deliciously queer camp Batman & Robin and this week, we’re back in Rural Horror territory with the cannibal prequel origin story we didn’t know we wanted in Declan O’Brien‘s Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011).

In the film, a group of college kids embark on a ski/snowmobile weekend when they get lost in a white-out storm. Seeking shelter in a nearby sanitarium that was the site of a horrific massacre, the group finds themselves hunted by a trio of inbred cannibals: the Hillicker brothers.

As the group is picked off one by one, they struggle to survive both the elements, as well as the traps set by the enterprising family hellbent on eating them. Who will live? Who will freeze to death? And who will be turned into a delectable practical FX meal and dipped in oil fondue?

Be sure to subscribe to the podcast to get a new episode every Wednesday. You can subscribe on iTunes/Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, iHeartRadio, SoundCloud, TuneIn, Amazon Music, Acast, Google Podcasts, and RSS.

    Episode 208 – Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (2011)

Zip up your ski jackets and look for the sanitarium on the ridge because we’re talking about the origin story of the Hillicker brothers with Declan O’Brien’s 2011 prequel, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings.

Don’t worry if you haven’t seen the other films; the most confusing part of this movie is keeping its cast of generic (white) actors apart (Vincent or Kyle? Jenna or Kenia?) Thankfully we’ve got great practical gore to make up for terrible acting and characterizations.

Plus: the shocking truth about the CGI, explicit lesbian sex scenes, Fahrenheit to Celsius conversions, and why we mean it as a compliment when we say this film is stupid fun.

Cross out Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings!

Coming up on Wednesday: We’re celebrating the deeply queer murder mystery film that inspired Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins’ The Last of Sheila (1973)!

P.S. Subscribe to our Patreon for more than 215 hours of additional content! We’re wrapping up the year with episodes on supersized slasher Terrifier 2, Into The Dark’s holiday-themed New Year, New You, Joe Begos’ killer robot Santa film Christmas Bloody Christmas, Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal love story Bones and All, Rian Johnson’s whodunnit sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and an audio commentary on the best horror sequel of all-time: Scream 2, just in time for its 25th anniversary!
