The show is expected to “return with a reimagined format in 2025,” a spokesperson told Billboard

The MTV Movie & TV Awards ceremony is being put “on pause” this year, according to a spokesperson, as Billboard reports.

The ceremony aired annually from 1992 to 2019, but it went on hiatus during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. It returned again for its live broadcast format in 2021 and 2022. Then in 2023, the ceremony was derailed by the Writers Guild of America strike.

Last year’s host Drew Barrymore pulled out three days before the ceremony, in the wake of the WGA strike that began five days before the show was set to take place. Other planned guests also pulled out of their scheduled appearances. The show then shifted gears and moved to a pre-recorded virtual ceremony without a host.

While the ceremony is on hiatus this year, it is expected to return next year, “with a reimagined format,” the spokesperson said, according to Billboard.  A rep for MTV did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment.

Prior to last year’s modified version of the ceremony, the show featured Vanessa Hudgens and Tayshia Adams as co-hosts in 2022. In 2021, Leslie Jones and Nikki Glasser served as co-hosts.

It’s unclear what led to this year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards pause, but it isn’t the first ceremony MTV has recently nixed. In October, the network’s parent company Paramount announced it canceled the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) set for Paris in light of the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict; it was the first time in EMAs three-decade history that the event was canceled.
