Ahead Of Bad Boys: Ride Or Die, IMAX Discussed What Sets Its Versions Apart

The newest installment of Bad Boys finally hit the big screen today, and it is a pleasure to have Marcus and Mike back in our lives. After two mega-hit films, the loveable duo was gone for seventeen years, but they returned for the well-received and popular Bad Boys For Life in 2020 and are back again for another go this summer. Their trademark blend of comedy and action works perfectly for the summer movie season, and not surprisingly, fans will have a chance to catch their exploits in IMAX®.

Ahead of the film’s release in partnership with AMC Theatres, we sent a camera crew to the premium format giant’s headquarters to learn all we could about the science behind The IMAX Experience®. While there, we discussed movies like Bad Boys: Ride Or Die and why they feel different when you’re watching them in IMAX. It turns out the answer is not just because the screen is bigger. The answer is because it’s an entirely separate version of the movie. Here’s what Sr Manager of Digital Mastering Jeff Dunant told us…

What really sets IMAX apart from the other premium large formats is the other premium large formats use the same version of the movie that’s playing in the auditorium next door. Whereas, at IMAX (we) work with the filmmaker to realize their vision for the movie in IMAX. So, it literally is a bespoke version for our theaters that you just don’t get with the other premium large formats.

That was the larger central theme in all our conversations with IMAX. It’s not about literally showing a movie on a nicer screen, nor is it about turning up the volume or adding more bass. It’s about working side-by-side with the filmmaker to figure out what the individual movie actually needs. Sometimes that means using IMAX cameras to literally shoot the movie. Other times that means working with the filmmaker the entire way to help create a conversion that serves the specific movie’s goals. With Bad Boys 4, you’ll notice that means making the action sequences pop in a certain way and the comedic banter pop in an entirely different way.

You can watch a summary of some of those conversations with IMAX experts in the video below…

Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is officially in theaters June 5th, and there’s no better way to experience it than in IMAX at an AMC Theatre. Tickets are available right now.
