‘Brush of the God’ – SRS Cinema Bringing Japanese Kaiju Movie to U.S. Theaters [Exclusive]

Japanese giant monster fantasy film Brush of the God is making landfall here in the United States, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned, with SRS Cinema giving the film a theatrical, digital, and physical media release. Brush of the God is the directorial debut of late great tokusatsu special FX master Keizō Murase, who passed away last October at age 89.

The SRS Cinema team reminds, “Keizō Murase was known for his legendary effects work in various classic Japanese science fiction/fantasy films and television series including Godzilla, Mothra, Gamera, DaiMajin, UltraMan, and Kamen Rider.”

In the new film, written by Takeshi Nakazawa with Nobuhiko Ishii based on a story by Keizō Murase, “Special effects modelmaker Kenzo Tokimiya has passed away. Akari, who did not have good memories of her grandfather’s work, visits a farewell party for his fans with mixed feelings. There, she meets her classmate Takuya, a hardcore tokusatsu fan.

“Akari and Takuya meet a young man named Hozumi, who was going to be in the movie Brush of the God that Kenzo was going to make. This comes as a surprise to Akari, since this is the first she has heard that her grandfather was involved in such a production. Hozumi picks up a brush, a prop from the Brush of the God exhibit, and draws a circle in the air: ‘Please save his world!’

“With Hozumi’s words, Akari and Takuya are swallowed by the wormhole that suddenly appears. The next thing they know, they have entered the world of the movie Brush of the God, greeted by the terrible visage of the kaiju Yamata no Orochi, which is not supposed to be in the movie, trying to burn everything in this world.

“In order to get back to the original world, the two must unravel the secret of the movie Brush of the God that Kenzo was supposed to make.”

Brush of the God will feature “practical man-in-suit vs. miniature special effects created by Daisuke Sato and Keizō Murase,” with the cast including Rio Suzuki, Takeru Narahara, Yumiko Shaku (Godzilla Against Mecha Godzilla), Takumi Saitoh (Shin UltraMan), Shiro Sano (Godzilla: GMK), Masanori Machida (Gappa), Takumi Magoshi, Waka Yoshida, and Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla). The Assistant Director was Yoshikazu Ishii (Godzilla: Final Wars).

SRS Cinema said in a statement, “We are extremely honored to present this landmark release to North American fans. The release plan is for a limited regional theatrical release tour in the late summer through the fall followed by physical media and digital releases in winter.”

Stay tuned for more on the U.S. release of Brush of the God as we learn it.
