    Landman’s Characters Are TV’s Most Unlikable


    Landman is back for a second season, and while many of Taylor Sheridan’s shows fall victim to the sophomore slump, the season has a decent arc.

    However, it’s becoming clear that if anything is to sink the oil drama, it’ll be the characters.

    We’re not talking about their language use or fashion choice here — the characters are genuinely pointless and annoying.

    Is it the trophy wife and the imbecilic daughter?

    Is it the landman who is always complaining about something but never finds a solution?

    What about the son with blinding ambition but no emotional intelligence?

    Watching them is like being trapped at the world’s worst family reunion, and I’m done pretending it’s entertaining. Landman needs to fix them or cut them loose.

    Angela and Ainsley: The Time Wasters

    This is that duo — the one that adds nothing to the story except to get other characters’ blood boiling, and the viewer’s too.

    Look, it might look cute in oil country to showcase these materialistic women who have never known a struggle a day in their lives, but in a TV show, they are an eyesore.

    They are always involved in some vanity project or another, projects that make them feel better but add nothing to anyone’s life.

    Angela prides herself on being a wild card, while Ainsley is pretty, and she knows it. But beyond that, these characters offer nothing but a predictable mess. I can always anticipate Angela’s next outburst and Ainsley’s next stupid phrase.

    It was funny for the first few episodes, but now it’s just plain annoying. What actually is their purpose in the narrative? To add more chaos to Tommy’s life? He’s doing just fine with his rants and backbreaking work.

    These screentime parasites will kill this show, and themselves with it.

    Tommy Norris: The Relic

    Tommy is what I call the Taylor Sheridan male — an older, relatively wealthy white guy who thinks being alive for several decades makes him the wisest person in the room.

    Let’s call him what he is: a relic. Like Yellowstone‘s John Dutton, he’s holding on to outdated ideas because they give him purpose and catharsis whenever he goes on another long-winded rant.

    Seriously, Sheridan, we know where you stand on issues. Try to make your characters sound less like you.

    Tommy represents a relic who the tide of change will sweep away, and he’ll deliver monologues as that happens.

    And his role in the show? Also predictable. He is the writer’s mouthpiece, but one whose messages we’ve heard time and time again. Every time he’s on the screen, I get a strong urge to scream, ‘Change or perish!’

    Two seasons in, we’ve had enough of him.

    And in those seasons, someone else has shown his true colors: Cooper is just like the rest of them.

    Cooper Norris: The Emotionally Stunted Idiot

    I always liked Cooper because he seemed different from his family. He had real ambition and was going to do it his way if it killed him.

    He was not afraid of calling out his mother for being a chaos machine and his sister for being stupid and entitled. Half the time, she can’t tell she’s being ridiculed anyway.

    Enter Landman Season 2, and his ambition has eclipsed his mother’s desire for a soft life she never worked for. One can see the glee in his face when he learns of the prospective money he’s bound to make.

    He misses the real human by his side who is suffering after losing her husband in the same line of work.

    He ridicules his sister for being stupid, only to make the stupidest mistakes, like going into business with shady characters. Sounds just like his father, and if I don’t like him, no way I’m liking Tommy Jr.

    Turns out Cooper isn’t the antidote to his family; he’s just Tommy Jr. with worse judgment.

    The Norris clan is the worst bunch ever, and they are not making it easy to like this show. It’s as if the Gallagher family from Shameless was made up of Franks only. Nobody wants to see that.

    The show is losing viewers fast, and I’m one of them.

    Between the prudes who can’t stand all the cursing, the dedicated Angela and Ainsley haters, and those of us who watch it with our propaganda detector on, it’s not long for this world.

    Remember Nathan’s reaction whenever Ainsley brings up her “sport?” That’s me in a nutshell with these characters.
