Double Standards Make Sheriff Country’s Eva Redemption Nearly Impossible

Double Standards Make Sheriff Country’s Eva Redemption Nearly Impossible

How can you possibly give a mother faking her death and abandoning her six-year-old daughter a redeemable storyline? I’m not sure, but Sheriff Country needs to do it.

The Sheriff Country Season 1 finale delivered a soapy storyline that should bring us some juicy plot points for the second season.

While I’m still on the fence about whether I like a character coming back from the dead or not, there’s no doubt that it’ll be intriguing to see how good the writers are.

    (Darren Goldstein/CBS)

After all, this plot will put them to the test to make us respect and like Eva, even after everything she did.

Mothers Are Held to a Higher Standard Than Fathers

Look, I think we can all agree that society holds mothers to a much higher standard than fathers when it comes to parenting.

People will judge a man for leaving his family behind, but there is also an acceptance of it because it happens all the time. The bar is pretty low for men.

Is it right? Definitely not, but that’s not what we’re getting into here.

    (Darren Goldstein/CBS)

Sheriff Country knows that viewers will hold Eva to a higher standard. If Wes was the one who faked his death, it wouldn’t be too hard to justify.

I can go back to Supernatural to show just how much is expected of mothers, with the hatred that Mary received when she came back from the dead.

Despite her returning as the mother of a toddler and a baby, and suddenly having two grown sons, the fandom expected her to immediately be a mother, and she received so much hate when she disappeared for episodes at a time.

John, though? Well, he went a whole season leaving cryptic messages for his sons and hiding from them. Fans accepted that and decided that he was doing the right thing for his boys.

I’ll still defend Mary Winchester given all the facts, but I’m often in the minority.

    (Darren Goldstein/CBS)

I’d expect Sheriff Country would have found something similar had Eva and Wes’ roles in Mickey’s life been switched around.

So, Eva is going to have a lot of hate from the fandom. The writers have a huge job to make her likable.

After all, bringing Mickey’s mom back into her life will reopen deep wounds, but it also offers hope that Mickey will have another family member.

Something Mickey has always wanted is a mom. She’s grieved deeply, and after everything she’s been through with Skye, Travis, and now Alec, Mickey deserves some happiness in her life.

Don’t we want Mickey to have what she’s dreamed about for her entire life?

    There’s Already a Backstory Revealed

Sheriff Country showrunner, Matt Lopez, told Soaps that there is already a backstory. Eva took on the identity of Sarah Berrnel when she went undercover in Edgewater as a young DEA agent.

This would suggest that after Wes and Sarah’s arrests, Sarah — aka Eva — had to fake her death to then get back on with her DEA career.

Great, but it also means that at some point, she chose to delve deeper into her undercover identity, have a child, and raise that child before taking Wes down.

    (Darren Goldstein/CBS)

How could she do that? This is where I’m excited to see how the story will redeem Eva.

I’m not even sure it’s possible to do that. Wouldn’t Eva want to get her daughter and take her with her?

The best way to redeem her is to have a flashback where Eva is told she can’t take Mickey for some reason, or maybe there’s even a darker lie, such as someone telling her that Mickey was killed during the arrest.

However, that doesn’t connect to something Eva said to Mickey in the Sheriff Country Season 1 Finale.

    (Darren Goldstein/CBS)

Eva understood what Mickey was going through, stepping away from someone they love for the sake of their job.

While she was talking about Alec at the time, there’s a hint that she was also talking about Wes and Mickey.

What I know for sure about Sheriff Country Season 2 is that we’re getting some juicy storylines, but it’s also going to get a lot more soapy!

What’s your take on the entire Eva storyline?

We need to see some sort of redemption arc for Eva on Sheriff Country Season 2, but I can’t see how that’s possible right now.
