It’s been a full decade since Combs debuted with “Hurricane.” For awhile he had the longest streak of No. 1 hits that anyone could remember and that inevitably led to awards show honors, including two Entertainer of the Year wins.
The reason why the now-married 36-year-old ranks at No. 2 on our important modern country artists list is because he keeps surprising us. Songs about love and heartbreak are his bread and butter, but every once in awhile he’ll deliver a wild exception (like the No. 9 song below) or a very, very sad one (see No. 6).

Who Is Luke Combs?
Luke Combs was born March 2, 1990 near Charlotte, North Carolina. He was on his way to a business or criminal justice degree when he began playing live near Appalachian State University. With less than a year remaining he dropped out to chase this country music dream.
It took a few years and a lot of “No” from Music City executives, but eventually Combs found a home at Sony Music Nashville. He was a star from the moment he shared his debut single and really nothing has slowed him down except himself.
Once Combs and wife Nicole began having kids, he made a conscious decision to step back and focus on family.

Luke Combs has 20 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. That’s two per year for over a decade and it doesn’t even include his full singles output. Seven more went Top 10 and we haven’t even talked about the deep cuts that make him a rare album artist in 2026.

Artists who’ve not released an album or notched a hit song on airplay or streaming charts in the last three years need to show their influence in other ways. An example is Carrie Underwood, who’s not released a new album in four years but is the most influential voice on America’s most popular singing reality show.
