To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Gorillaz’ eponymous debut album, the band’s co-creator and artist Jamie Hewlett has teamed up with Z2 Comics to release The Gorillaz Art Book in April 2022. The 288-page coffee table book includes “new interpretations” of Gorillaz by over 40 artists, including Robert Smith, Jack Black, Slaves’ Laurie Vincent, and Hewlett himself.
“Gorillaz have always collaborated with music, but this is the first time we’ve done an art collaboration,” said Hewlett in a statement. “I’ve really enjoyed working with so many of my favorite artists and the result is this amazing book.”
In addition to the aforementioned musicians, The Gorillaz Art Book also includes contributions from The Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, Clone High art director Tara Billinger, Adventure Time artist Erik Fountain, Buffy the Vampire Slayer cartoonist Marianna Ignazzi, Mad Max: Fury Road co-writer Brendan McCarthy, and music video director Ruffmercy.
Earlier this year, Gorillaz announced a super deluxe box set reissue of their debut album Gorillaz and released a three-song EP titled Meanwhile. In 2020, they dropped their all-star Song Machine: Season One – Strange Timez project as well as Gorillaz Almanac, a book documenting the group’s 20-year history.
