Law & Order is set to return to NBC later this month after an 11-and-a-half year layoff, and it’s possible that another familiar face could be joining the revival.
Jesse L. Martin, who played Detective Ed Green in the iconic Dick Wolf police and legal drama, hinted at a potential return during Thursday’s edition of the CBS talk show The Talk. “I couldn’t possibly say. I certainly hope so,” Martin said when asked the question.
He added: “There were a lot of loose ends when Ed Green left the scene, if you will. Err… yes, maybe.”
Martin starred in Law & Order from 1999 to 2008, first appearing in Season 10 and continuing through the end of Season 18. His character was indicted and tried for a shooting, though all charges were subsequently dropped. While his name was cleared, Green decided to leave the force as he was unhappy with having “broken every rule in the book.”
Despite exiting the show in 2008, Martin was Law & Order‘s fifth-longest serving cast member behind S. Epatha Merkerson, Sam Waterston, Jerry Orbach, and Steven Hill. The upcoming Season 21 will see Waterston reprise his role as District Attorney Jack McCoy.
In addition to his work on Law & Order, Martin plays Joe West in The CW superhero series The Flash. His other credits include the NBC action-drama The Philanthropist, the musical drama Smash, and the Fox legal comedy-drama Ally McBeal. He also originated the role of Tom Collins in the Broadway musical Rent.
The return of Law & Order was announced in September 2021 and will premiere on February 24, 2022. The new series will once again explore “the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.”
