‘The Crown’ Prequel In Talks at Netflix

A prequel series to The Crown may be coming to Netflix in the future, according to Variety. While no official plans have been greenlit, there is good reason to believe that we may get to go back in time for a glimpse at the British royal family at the turn of the 20th century.

Reportedly, the prequel would begin with Queen Victoria’s death in 1901 and span up until Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding in 1947, which is when the first season of The Crown begins. Show creator Peter Morgan would write the prequel series, and it wouldn’t just be one season. The “speculative” show would run anywhere from three to five seasons. During this pocket of time, we would see the reigns of four different kings: Edward VII (1901-10), George V (1910-36), Edward VIII (1936), and George VI (1936-52).

So far, The Crown has had an incredibly successful four-season run, winning 11 Primetime Emmy Awards last year alone. The show garnered two Emmys in 2020, five in 2018, and three in 2017. We can expect Season 5 to arrive on the streaming platform in November, with a new cast that will depict the royal family during the 1990s. Following that, the sixth — and final — season of The Crown is scheduled to be filmed this August.

Perhaps once the groundwork has been laid for the original show’s conclusion, more updates on the prequel series will come to light. Netflix is taking a page out of HBO‘s book, as they revive their popular Game of Thrones franchise with prequel series House of the Dragon later this summer.

The Most Watched Netflix Shows Ever
