Lunar New Year is just around the corner. Whether you’re celebrating with family, friends or roommates, it’s tradition to wear something new to signify a fresh start for the new year. This coming year is the Year of Tiger, which symbolizes strength, bravery and loyalty. In particular, if this is your “birth sign year” (people born in 2010, 1998, 1986, etc.), wearing red (specifically red underwear) could shield you from bad luck.

Although many fashion labels have come out with special collections in celebration of the Lunar New Year, many have noted the holiday’s commercialization by Western brands. With the increasing buying power and visibility of the Asian population, in North America or abroad, its impossible to ignore the tremendous talent from this group of people that have long been overlooked.

From established names like Issey Miyake, Vera Wang and Prabal Gurung to up-and-coming stars like SHUSHU/TONG and Rui Zhou, Asian designers are making their mark on the runways and in the hearts of fashion lovers everywhere. And most recently, fashion house Kenzo entrusted Japanese designer Nigo as its new artistic director.

So, if you’re looking for a Lunar New Year gift for your loved one (or a new outfit to wear for yourself), we present some of the most talented Asian designers to shop as we welcome the Year of the Tiger.
