Miranda Lambert and Elle King have made country music history. Their duet, “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” lands at the No. 1 spot on both the Billboard Country Airplay and the Mediabase country chart this week, marking the first time since 1993 that a duet between two women has occupied that space.
Its predecessor is Reba McEntire and Linda Davis’ “Does He Love You,” a very different kind of song: Where McEntire and Davis’ hit was somber and traditional-leaning, “Drunk” is a pop-leaning party anthem. After King and Lambert went No. 1, Lambert celebrated on social media, but also made sure to acknowledge her predecessors.
“The fact that a duet by 2 women hasn’t been #1 in country music since 1993 is crazy to me. So the fact that we got here today means even more because it’s bigger than us,” Lambert remarks on social media. “Thanks [Reba] and Linda for paving the way.”
McEntire responded to share her excitement.”Congratulations ladies! Long overdue. Have a drink for me!” the legend says, along with an emoji of two clinking champagne glasses.
Lambert also stressed how excited she was to share the milestone with a duet partner she admires so much. “Elle is one of my favorite artists and one of my favorite people to be around,” she says. “I am so proud to call her my friend and I’m so glad she asked me to do this song with her.”
Lambert and King first put out their duet in February 2021. In the year-plus that it took for the song to reach the top of the charts, both artists have been busy releasing their own solo material. Though she’s technically in the rock genre, King’s always been country-curious, and she released her twangy “Out Yonder,” as well as teasing a new duet with Dierks Bentley (King and Bentley previously teamed up for “Different for Girls” in 2016). King is also touring with Chris Stapleton this year.
Meanwhile, Lambert announced a full album, Palomino, for release at the end of April. She’s been teasing new songs off that project, including its lead single, “If I Was a Cowboy.”
