Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 15 Offers a Compelling Case Despite An Unrealistic Premise

    Critic’s Rating: 4 / 5.0

Sean and Jonah’s story on Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 15 certainly was unrealistic.

The patrol officers finding dead bodies during a noise complaint and calling for more experienced cops made sense, but what followed didn’t seem in line with proper police procedure.

Still, Boston Blue’s central story was interesting and fun, even if it was nearly impossible to suspend disbelief about the rookies’ role in it.

    (John Medland/CBS)

Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 15 Included The Worst Undercover Operation Ever

After the guys found the bodies, Danny’s decision to use undercover officers to pass as college students at a drug-filled rave made sense… but he should have chosen people with actual experience.

Jonah and Sean doing this job was as goofy as any of their other Boston Blue storylines, except this one was especially high-stakes.

Were there seriously no experienced officers who could fit in at that party? I get that Sean and Jonah were the right age, but come on!

Nobody could have believed they were remotely qualified or able to do this job without making a mess out of it, and that’s exactly what happened.

    (John Medland/CBS)

It’s hard to believe that Danny would support Sean’s involvement in an undercover operation.

He’s usually overprotective of his new-to-the-force son, and undercover operations are more dangerous than regular police work.

He didn’t even seem concerned when Sean (predictably) admitted to Penny that he was working a case in the club — he was more bemused than anything.

Penny’s inclusion in the scene bugged me more than anything else about this entirely unrealistic scenario.

If Sean and Jonah were going in as undercovers, someone should have considered the possibility that Sean’s ex with a record might be the type who regularly attends these parties, especially since Penny said she was working for the company the cops were targeting.

    ( John Medland/CBS)

I’d like to think that undercover operations involve more than throwing a couple of age-appropriate cops into a situation and hoping it comes out right, but that seemed to be exactly what Danny and Lena did here.

Once Penny was spotted on camera, Sean should have been removed from the situation, or at least warned to stay away from her, so that she didn’t blow his cover. Instead, Sean approached her because he thought their personal connection could get him the information he needed.

Unsurprisingly, she saw through that in thirty seconds, calling him by his real name and asking if he was working. Talk about an unprofessional and dangerous move on Sean’s part!

While Sean’s blunder was more obvious, I feel like Jonah got too much credit from his family for his smooth delivery of the drug request.

To me, he was way too obvious. He came up to the dealer and asked him for drugs without even saying hello.

    (John Medland/CBS)

Honestly, while nobody deserved to get stabbed, that guy did deserve to get arrested just for being careless after falling for that obvious set-up.

I’d think someone dealing drugs at a party would be a little more worried about getting caught than that. People who are doing something highly illegal that carries a long prison sentence are usually paranoid about undercover cops and wouldn’t sell to just anybody.

Of course, it all fell apart thanks to the stabbing, and Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 15 shifted quickly into the Penny subplot.

Did you find this undercover story to be at all realistic?

Danny interrogating Penny himself was almost as unrealistic as allowing Sean to do it. Neither father nor son should have been questioning Sean’s ex-girlfriend.

Still, it gave us a chance to get to know Penny better, and the interrogation scenes were interesting.

    (Brendan Adam-Zwelling/CBS)

I don’t buy that Penny is this great girl that Sean let get away, though.

She’s a girl with a record who also happened to be working at a drug-filled rave where someone got stabbed. I know that people aren’t defined by their criminal records and that she might be a better person than she seems, but we haven’t gotten much evidence of that.

All those mentions of Frank on Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 15 made me wish that he’d come visit Boston, if for no other reason than to deliver one of his epic one-liners about this so-called relationship.

Edwin’s Subplot Interested Me The Most on Boston Blue Season 1 Episode 15

I was rooting for the cops to find the stabber and stop the drug flow despite the silly premise, but Edwin’s storyline caught my attention.

    (Brendan Adam-Zwelling/CBS)

You’d think Edwin would have had a cardiologic workup after he was shot, but nevertheless, this potential health issue storyline was emotional.

For one thing, Mae’s discovery that he had kept the truth from her about her mother’s suicide had damaged their relationship, and that doesn’t go away just because that episode is over (or at least it shouldn’t!).

Edwin’s refusal to listen to her and go to the doctor, and his irritation that she was monitoring his health messages, made more sense in light of their earlier argument.

And yet it was obvious that he was going to get bad news — if not, there would be little point to this story about Mae pushing him to practice what he preached to his congregation and face his fear of getting the tests done.

His discovery that he has a serious heart condition comes just as the light-hearted interview subplot led to Lena wanting to unbury another secret: who her birth father was.

    (Brendan Adam-Zwelling/CBS )

Edwin’s suggestion that Mae had no business judging the secret he kept when she’s keeping one of her own hits harder than ever now, and I can’t wait to find out where this goes.
