Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones, Mama) is officially heading into The Black Tapes. Following the casting news from Daniel Richtman that we reported over the weekend, MGM+ has ordered eight episodes of the supernatural horror series based on the popular podcast.
Deadline confirms the news and adds that John Rogers (Leverage) will serve as showrunner. Podcast creators Terry Miles and Paul Bae are writing the adaptation alongside Rogers, with production scheduled to begin in Vancouver in January 2027.
Coster-Waldau plays Dr. Richard Strand, a psychiatrist whose own past holds secrets. He joins scientist Alex Regan in investigating supposedly supernatural events, from possessions and hauntings to unexplained disappearances. Their efforts to disprove these cases expose an occult world and a conspiracy centuries in the making.
The podcast launched in 2015 and has since amassed more than 60 million downloads. Its journey to television has been a long one: we covered an earlier adaptation in development at NBC back in 2018, but that version never reached the pilot stage.
Rogers, an early fan of the podcast, says keeping its creators involved will give the adaptation room to explore beyond the original story.
“It’s a unique blend of truly unsettling horror and puzzle-box conspiracy mystery,” Rogers said. “With Paul and Terry not just executive producing, but also in the writer’s room, we have a chance to both bring The Black Tapes to a new generation of genre fans and deepen and expand the mythos in ways that will surprise long-time supernatural horror fans.”
MGM+ Studios produces the series, with Miles, Bae, Rogers, Kearie Peak, and Jennifer Court executive producing. A premiere date has not been announced.
