Before getting married on Dec. 5, 1993, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band co-founder Jeff Hanna and talented songwriter Matraca Berg bonded in a very sweet (literally) way. The two met on tour with Clint Black in the late 1980s, and before every show, they ate pie together — a tradition Berg says was “so country.””We were married to different people when we met. And, in fact, our spouses were friends of each other. It’s a long story. But both of our marriages imploded,” Hanna recalls, adding that, ”after the dust settled” from his divorce, he was unaware that Berg had divorced as well. When someone suggested that the Hanna and Berg write…
In the last few years, CJ Strock, a talent agent who worked with the later incarnation of the Allman Brothers Band, faced an unusual dilemma. As seen in catalog and merch sales, a market still existed for the Allmans, their quintessentially Southern rock & roll, and their improvisational live shows, but the band itself didn’t exist: They formally gave their last performances in 2014, and Gregg Allman died of liver cancer three years later. With an eye toward introducing new fans to the band, Strock had an idea — essentially a new Allmans. He reached out to musician clients who were…

Now, over a month later, Smith has a funny take on the event. So what happens when you gather…
After revealing a whack of character posters earlier this week for their upcoming adaptation of The Last of Us, HBO has unleashed the big one with the official trailer. Set to a-ha’s “Take On Me” (seriously), the new trailer sports almost entirely new footage, as well as recreating some iconic scenes from the first game. Co-written and executive produced by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and Naughty Dog vice president Neil Druckmann, the series will cover the events of the first game, twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed due to the Cordyceps infection. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired…
A weakening journalism industry is one arm of the octopus which has allowed book bans and censorship to thrive in the current environment. It’s not just the loss of local news, though. Further contributing is the insistence of calling book censorship a matter of “culture war.” Censorship is not, nor has it ever been, a culture war. A “culture war” is what happens between two (or more) factions working to assert dominance for their belief system. Keeping to this part of the definition, censorship might fall under the umbrella of the term. But “culture war” describes more than a fringe…

Kentucky native Brit Taylor recruited Texas country outfit Mike & the Moonpies for her new Christmas single “Lonely on Christmas.”The tune is an old-fashioned, honky tonk lament about the pain of not having anyone around during the holidays. She’s home alone, surrounded by tinsel and lights, and he’s flying solo at his local watering hole, lamenting their solitude during the holiday season. While the pair share their loneliness, the song’s message encourages others to reach out to others who may feel isolated at this time…
