Don’t tell my sister, but she is not my favorite Virgo. That title might just belong to the man, the myth, the legend Alexander Skarsgård. The 6′ 4″ gift to the screen turns 47 years old on August 25. I figured it was time to put my thirsty eye to use again and assemble a streaming guide. That way, we can celebrate the momentous occasion while watching one of the actors who never strays too far from the genre. I present to the Midnight Society eight swoon-worthy titles you can stream to honor this tall, talented, and hot genre staple. Let’s go!

alexander skarsgard - 8 Titles To Celebrate Genre King Alexander Skarsgård's Birthday

Battleship (2012)

Where You Can Watch: Prime Video

A fleet of ships must battle extraterrestrials in this movie based on the Hasbro board game. Alexander Skarsgård sunk many battleships when he appeared in this movie as Commander Stone Hopper. His main objective was to force his brother to join the Navy and wait in the wings to see what fate and aliens had in store for his character’s brother. We love a chaotic movie choice by a chaos king.

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)

Where You Can Watch: Max

Godzilla and Kong meet up to fight in this legendary monster mashup. I know at least 90 people who would have risked life and limb to see this go down. So, it’s no surprise our birthday boy signed on the dotted line the second a contract was ready. This time, he plays the reluctant hero scientist in way over his head when it comes to giant monsters who want to battle in the streets.

Hold The Dark (2018)

Where You Can Watch: Netflix

A writer is hired to find a missing six-year-old boy in the Alaskan wilderness. While Jeffrey Wright plays the lead role, that does not stop Mr. Skarsgård from dropping in to make things weird in this thriller. His chosen method for making matters worse is murder, and it is hard to look away from. This movie does need a sexual assault warning, so proceed with caution.

Infinity Pool (2023)

Where You Can Watch: Hulu

A privileged couple’s vacation is interrupted after a hit-and-run reveals a world of violence on the island. Alexander Skarsgård knew when he showed up at Sundance wearing a leash we would all watch this. While we praise him for his acting, looks, and personality, we continue to sleep on his marketing prowess. He plays James in the chaotic movie, and even that might be telling you too much if you haven’t seen it yet.

Mute (2018)

Where You Can Watch: Netflix

A mute person crosses paths with gangsters while looking for his missing partner. This is a whole-ass mystery sci-fi thriller that also stars Paul Rudd and Sam Rockwell. If those words together don’t make you want to hit play, I don’t know what else I could add to the conversation. For the rest of you, see you on the other side!

The Northman (2022)

Where You Can Watch: Peacock

A Viking prince wants revenge for the murder of his father. Someone really said, “You know what HamletThe Lion King, and Star Wars is missing? Alexander Skarsgård!” They then proceeded to open their checkbooks. Many people seemed to agree because those movie tickets didn’t just buy themselves. As someone who usually wishes more media had more Skarsgård, I cannot even be mad.

The Stand (2020)

Where You Can Watch: Paramount+

Stephen King’s most epic battle between heaven and hell is retold for a newer audience. Our prince is playing the icon for evil, Randall Flagg, and seemed to have a damn good time in the role from the looks of it. I’m here for the trend of redoing King stories that have already been told on screen if we keep adding members of the Skarsgård family.

True Blood (2008–2014)

Where You Can Watch: Hulu and Max

Things get even weirder for the resident telepath, Sookie Stackhouse when vampires further complicate her life. We all looked disrespectfully at this sexy series for 7 seasons. However, the show lied to us the whole run by trying to convince us Sookie couldn’t choose between Bill Compton and Eric Northman. Who among us would not throw it all away for Eric when he has the face of our man of the hour? Be for real!

While I’m sad more of Alexander Skarsgård’s genre work isn’t available on streamers, I think this is enough to keep us busy for a few days. Worst-case scenario we can check him out in shows that don’t “technically” fit under the umbrella. For example, Big Little Lies is definitely a mystery sitting on Max (formerly HBO Max) alongside the stressfully addictive Succession. Or you could just rent a few of his thrillers like Hidden or Straw Dogs. What do I know though? I’m just a girl on the internet who watches too much TV.
