Every Horror Movie Premiering on Prime Video in September

Fall is officially here. Well, not quite here. But soon enough, the leaves will start changing, the air will grow chillier, and the days will shrink as the nights expand. In other words, it’s the perfect time to begin binging those seasonal chills. Horror movies are fantastic all year, no doubt, but they hit just a little differently when streamed in the fall. Prime Video has assured horror fans everywhere have something to watch this season with a bevy of new titles being added for September. Here, we’ll be looking at five highlights with the full list of everything coming to Prime Video this September at the bottom.

Wilderness

Premiering on Prime Video on September 15, Wilderness hails from creator So Yong Kim and is adapted from the novel by B.E. Jones. While plot details are scarce, broadly, the series follows a couple whose holiday turns into a nightmare of violent proportions. Oliver Jackson-Cohen of The Haunting of Hill House fame stars alongside Jenna Coleman of The Cry (an excellent miniseries if you haven’t caught it yet). Ashley Benson and Eric Belfour co-star, and notably, a re-recorded version of Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” features in the trailer. If that doesn’t sell you, I don’t know what will.

Drag Me to Hell

Sam Raimi’s opus, Drag Me to Hell feels like the kind of gonzo midnighter he’d been trying to make since his Evil Dead days. Even more than a decade out, it remains one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Raimi and the cast, especially Alison Lohman, are firing on all cylinders here. Lohman’s Christine Brown must contend with a curse that will quite literally drag her into the bowels of Hell after she declines a bank loan for an elderly Roma woman. Violent, scary, and riotously funny, horror is rarely as inspired as it is in Drag Me to Hell. Don’t miss it on Prime Video this month.

As Above, So Below

John Erick Dowdle’s As Above, So Below may have had an abysmal critical reception at the time of release, but contemporary critics and fans have come around to appreciate it for what it wants to be—a terrifying found footage shocker. With dense lore, stellar performances, and plenty of claustrophobic scares in the Paris catacombs, As Above, So Below is a hellish descent well worth taking. Don’t miss it when it lands on Prime Video this month.

Deep Blue Sea

For fans who loved checking out Stephen Scarlata’s Sharksploitation documentary on Shudder, one of the director’s favorites is landing on Prime Video this month—Renny Harlin’s Deep Blue Sea. One of the 90s late, great shark shockers, this B-movie with a Hollywood budget remains a perennial delight. A deeply silly tale of artificially intelligent sharks, underwater laboratories, and Samuel L. Jackson monologues, Deep Blue Sea never takes itself too seriously. The carnage is gruesome, the science is admittedly more plausible than it seems, and as a template for big-budget shlock, it’s unbeatable.

I Saw the Devil

Kim Jee-woon’s I Saw the Devil is one of the greatest serial killer movies ever. A scorching, propulsive, sickeningly gruesome epic of star-crossed enemies, it’s Korean genre cinema at its finest, and with its arrival on Prime Video in September, it’s mandatory viewing. Kim Soo-hyun (Lee Byung-hun), an agent in the National Intelligence Service, tracks down serial killer Jang Kyung-chul (Choi Min-sik) after the death of his fiancé. Subverting cat and mouse expectations, Soo-hyun opts for catch-and-release, beating Kyung-chul within an inch of his life before releasing him for another go-round. Their twisted game spells disaster for every proximal participant, and for over two hours, it’s breathlessly intense before arriving at an inevitable yet no less tragic conclusion.

This month’s noteworthy offerings also include several Abbott And Costello features, Anaconda (fantastic double-viewing with Deep Blue Sea), and Raimi’s Army of Darkness.
