The #1 documentary on Netflix has the internet understandably pissed off. The feature hit the streamer two days ago and is already being praised for how it handles the subject matter. Victim/Suspect is the true-crime film we should all be paying attention to.
Synopsis
“On her first solo investigation, journalist Rae de Leon travels nationwide to uncover a shocking pattern: Young women tell the police they’ve been sexually assaulted, but instead of finding justice, they’re charged with the crime of making a false report, arrested, and even imprisoned by the system they believed would protect them.”

Victim/Suspect was directed by Nancy Schwartzman. The cast includes Rachel de Leon and Amanda Pike. It arrived on Netflix on May 23rd.
Viewers have taken to Twitter to share their disgust with how the justice system fails survivors. Many people are understandably angry after watching police bully people who have endured a violent assault into recanting their statements.

Let me get this straight:
1. Woman reports rape
2. Suspect isn’t interviewed
3. Police lie about footage showing she wasn’t
4. Woman is forced to retract allegation
5. Police charge woman for false reportingIs this the fucking world we live in?#victimsuspect @netflix

#VictimSuspect shows just how poorly rape victims are treated by the police. This is how rapists get away with it and then people also wonder why victims don't speak up.

Ya’ll *need* to watch this documentary. This is just another reason that police departments need overhauled ASAP. I don’t give a flying fuck if you think someone is lying — in fact, only 2% of sexual assault cases (1/2)#VictimSuspect

Watching Victim/Suspect and for anyone who may wonder why you’d sign a false confession. I was 18, blamed myself for my abuse from my uncle and after 2 hours of the cops blaming me, I was broken. Even though my abuse was real at that point I’d have signed a confession to leave.

Victim/Suspect on Netflix is infuriating! Fuck those detectives! This is why women don’t report!

Watching “Victim/Suspect” on Netflix and there were no attempts at solving these assaults. NONE. Except by the reporters. I SWEAR all true crime stories have this common theme. Then to blame the victims for the crime?! pic.twitter.com/0OMwi0QMRC

I feel so sick watching this. Actually SICK. The police officers in this documentary all need to be held to justice. Absolutely vile human beings 😭 #VictimSuspect

This documentary might not be something most of us can watch. However, I hope the conversations about how insidious rape culture is and how the police continue to fail survivors do not get lost in the discourse.
It’s definitely hard to watch and is guaranteed to upset anyone with a soul. However, it’s also an important watch for those who don’t know why survivors hesitate to report assault. Click on the trailer below to see if it is something you might watch.
