The Woman Under the Stage is produced by Dallas-based writer/director Mitch McLeod. McLeod’s previous feature, Silhouette, was a fan favorite, with some arguing that McLeod was helping to save the indie horror filmmaking scene in Dallas. Check out the trailer for The Woman Under the Stage here:

Made for a reported budget of just $30,000, The Woman Under the Stage is a promising augur for what feature filmmakers can accomplish with few resources. Jessica Dawn Willis (Silhouette, False Profits, Surviving the Cartel) and Matthew Tompkins (The Harrowing, Sicario, Confession) star in the feature. A release is planned through ITN Distribution later this year.

Already, 2023 has seen indie sensations like Skinamarink and The Outwaters shocked audiences (and box offices) everywhere. Just last year, Terrifier 2 dominated the Halloween box office, grossing $15 million against a reported $250,000 budget.

Indie horror is on the rise, showcasing exceptionally promising young talent, and The Woman Under the Stage looks to be the latest in a long line of indie hits horror fans won’t want to miss. Indie filmmaking is the lifeblood of the genre (remember, John Carpenter’s Halloween was itself an indie), and here, I want to encourage all horror fans to support filmmakers and titles beyond the major, mainstream releases.

What do you think? Do you plan on checking out The Woman Under the Stage? What other indie horror titles do you recommend? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins.
