Dark series creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese blew our collective minds when their hit series hit Netflix in 2017. Odar Friese proved themselves as writers with an eye for the bizarre, creating engaging stories intertwined with the supernatural. Now, they’re back with another cerebral series, 1899, another Netflix original. Premiering on the streamer in mid-November, it continues to dominate the charts with its fascinating premise and cast of mysterious characters.

Read the full synopsis below:

1899. A migrant steamship heads west to leave the old continent. The passengers, a mixed bag of European origins, united by their hopes and dreams for the new century and their future abroad. But their journey takes an unexpected turn when they discover another migrant ship adrift on open sea. What they will find on board, will turn their passage to the promised land into a horrifying nightmare.

Mysterious coordinates coming from a presumably lost ship definitely couldn’t spell disaster. We’ve seen it before in Alien, Event Horizon, the list goes on. But in 1899, it isn’t terrifying extraterrestrial life that awaits them. Instead, it’s something much more mind-bending and cerebral. What happened to the over 1400 passengers on the missing vessel? You’ll have to watch the series to find out.

1899 grabbed the attention of the Critics Choice Association. It recently snagged a nomination for best foreign language series.

Viewers are excited about the nomination, and also demanding a season two after the first season’s shocking ending.

Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musial, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, Yann Gael, Mathilde Ollivier, José Pimentão, Isabella Wei, Gabby Wong, Jonas Bloquet, Fflyn Edwards, Alexandre Willaume and Anton Lesser star in the Netflix series.
