Donald Sutherland has joined the cast of the upcoming Bass Reeves show that’s in the works at Paramount+, which has also been renamed.

The Bass Reeves show has now been retitled Lawmen: Bass Reeves and is described as an anthology series that will have future installments that cover various iconic lawmen throughout history. Variety notes that Sutherland will appear in the show in a recurring role. He’ll play Judge Isaac Parker, someone described as “an imposing and commanding judge in the Fort Smith Courthouse with a complicated legacy.”

Alongside Sutherland, Lawmen: Bass Reeves will also star David Oyelowo as Reeves, with the rest of the cast set to include Lauren E. Banks, Forrest Goodluck, Barry Pepper, and Demi Singleton. Dennis Quaid, Joaquina Kalukango, Lonnie Chavis, Rob Morgan, Ryan O’Nan, Grantham Coleman, and Justin Hurtt-Dunkley will recur, with Shea Whigham and Garrett Hedlund set to guest star.

The series is set to “bring the legendary lawman of the wild west to life. Reeves, known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded,” according to its logline.

The series was originally announced two years ago, when David and Jessica Oyelowo
signed an exclusive deal with ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Studios to develop scripted and unscripted programs for the companies.
