‘Blue Bloods’ Tom Selleck Reveals Last Words To Co-Stars On Set

Blue Bloods has come to an end after fourteen seasons. Since the news of the series coming to an end came out, Tom Selleck, who played Frank Reagan, has discussed filming the end of the show, as well as his future plans. Recently, the actor shared some of his parting words with other members of the cast.

Tom Selleck Had Played Frank Reagan Since 2010

Selleck has played New York Police Department Police Commissioner Frank Reagan for over a decade. Having been part of the show since 2010, Selleck’s character serves as the patriarch of the Reagan family, who has long been part of New York’s police force.

The series recently aired its final episode on December 13, 2024. For his part, Selleck recently looked back on what it was like filming the last episode.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Selleck was asked what it was like being finished with Blue Bloods after fourteen years. He noted, “Well, I don’t think it goes away that quickly. We finished shooting our last episode in July, but it’s just now airing. It just takes an enormous amount of getting used to, which I’m still doing.”

The actor also shared what it was like working on the final episode. As he noted, “The real last day for me was the second to the last day when we shot the last family dinner.” Selleck felt like the moment when it was all over called for something poignant, but most of the cast kept quiet.

As the actor shared, “It was just suddenly when somebody said, ‘Well, we have to wrap it’ — it was very quiet for a while. Nobody made speeches. It seemed like something needed to be said.”

The Actor Also Shared On What He Would Miss The Most

Selleck decided it was up to him to break the silence with the help of a famous sonnet. As he revealed, “I ended up saying a poem from Edna St. Vincent Mallay — ‘Love is Not All’ — and that kind of started a discussion that lasted a couple hours. There were some tears and some hugs and group hugs, single hugs. Nobody wanted it to end.”

This classic poem discusses the challenges of love in this world. Ultimately, it shares the belief that love can overcome many things, even seemingly final things, like death itself. Selleck’s use of the poem arguably reflects the idea of love lasting past what should be an end.

Selleck noted what he was going to miss most about working on the series. Comparing things to a high school graduation, he noted, “The hardest thing I would say at this point [is] right now, this time of year, I would be shooting episodes of Blue Bloods, and I miss that. The thing that tugged at me most in adjusting and will continue is the family of actors we had and the friendships we formed.”

The actor noted that this is common with acting jobs. However, with how long Blue Bloods lasted, “this is just a bigger adjustment.”

The actor also talked about what he hoped to accomplish with the series by its end. As he noted, “My biggest goal is to make sure people realize we went out in rather spectacular success. It wasn’t tired, it wasn’t anything else. Somebody may be able to tell me someday why CBS wanted to end it, but I haven’t had a good answer yet.”
