There are many cult favorites out there that hail from the ’80s, but probably none so adored than Return of the Living Dead (1985), writer/director Dan O’Bannon’s toxic zombie masterpiece. Entertainment site JoBlo is reporting that they have info on the remake, saying they have word that Muck director Steve Wolsh is helming the project under his production company Living Dead Media.
In fact, Living Dead Media has confirmed on its own website that the reboot is happening.
“Our reboot of Return of the Living Dead will expand the existing world created by the original 5 films, while staying true to the R-rated, sci-fi, horror, dark comedy roots adored by fans of the cult classic around the world for the last 35 years. We are excited to resurrect this storied franchise for current fans and new generations of zombie fans.” — Living Dead Media.
Return of the Living Dead (1985) is probably the pinnacle of the four sequels that followed, although the franchise has its stans. One standout is Part 2.
Living Dead Media says it will hold on to the integrity of the series, focusing on the horror and comedy it’s known for, but they didn’t comment on the music, another aspect of the first film that made it so popular.
With songs from the legendary group The Cramps and T.S.O.L. the music is as much a part of the narrative as the zombies.
Wolsh’s Muck carries with it an air of controversy. He promised a trilogy of that movie that never materialized. That might be because the first one was so ill-received. Drenched in misogynistic tropes and tempered with overbearing machismo, the film suffered in critical circles. Hopefully, his vision of this classic film will fare better, especially since it is so well-loved by fans.
There is no word on when this film will go into production. But we will let you know when they are “Back from the grave and ready to party.”
