Exclusive Interview with Baylee Avery

Thank you for talking with us today Baylee Avery. How has the first part of 2022 been for you?

It’s been pretty decent! Thanks for asking. Since September, I had been working on a major project about the fangirl to music industry pipeline and I finally finished it the other night! So getting that published is – by far – one of my most accomplished moments of the year so far and I’m feeling ecstatic to get that published and have everyone read the people who participated’s stories.

Tell us more about what you do and how you got started? 

So I’m a music journalist and I write about music most of the time and sometimes interview people. Not often because I’m actually really shy, but I do love interviews whenever I get to do them.

I got my start by becoming a pop culture writer for a website and I spent five months writing for them. Then they got rid of the feature writing team and right after that, my amazing friend turned boss Rebecca posted about her looking for BANDED contributors and so I emailed her about it and she took me on.

Since then, I’ve been so happy and glad I made that decision to email her because Rebecca is the best boss, mentor and role model out there! I credit her for every good thing that’s come out of this career because I wouldn’t be where I am now without her.

The staff is also like family to me. We all support each other in the best way possible and lift each other up. They’re amazing people and amazing friends and I feel lucky to have the best working environment.

Any advice for others wanting to be writers – how to get started? 

Take on any kind of writing opportunity that comes your way and keep looking for other amazing opportunities!

I’ve learned that after taking on my first writing gig and it helped me along the way!

Do you ever get writer’s block? If you do, how do you overcome it? 

I do get writer’s block! I try to overcome it by finding different ways to get inspiration. Whether it is by reading books about music, watching music related movies, listening to my friends’ music or reading my friends’ articles – all of that has helped me with writer’s block, so I just take a deep breath and relax while doing those things. 

What is your favorite part of your job? 

Meeting new people and working with my friends! As I stated before; we’re like family so it makes everything easier!

Any dream person you would like to interview? 

I literally have a list! The people I want to interview the most are Harry Styles, Taylor Momsen, Greta Van Fleet, Dirty Honey, and Lana Del Rey. I’ve also been super into this band called The Beaches lately and they’re, honestly, now high on my list.
