“Pieces” is the dreamy, synth pop-laced single from enigmatic singer/songwriter Emily Daccarett. Singing as though she were a filter on an Instagram post, the textures and quirky melodies in her voice make for a far greater listening experience than if she were just your run-of-the-mill vocalist. “Pieces” has a vibe, a tone that tickles the mind with visions of dark places, like pieces of the puzzle trying to find the entire picture. As the song moves along, what’s evident is Daccarett’s quick rapport with the audience. She also gets you humming along.

One of Daccarett’s not-so-secret weapons is the way she gets lost in the melody. When she sings, and this reminds me a lot of Florence Welch, Daccarett seems to tumble away into a whole other planet or dreamland. She’s both having a conversation with the audience, as well as creating a whole entire emotional journey on the flip side of the coin. You get lost and follow her voice down the rabbit hole because you are just so enamored with the concoction and the brew she’s emitting. The song has a bit of an oceanic or ambient start. It almost reminded me of being underwater and the struggle to come to the surface. It’s not quite a fight to grasp for air, but she’s not floating to the top either. There is definitely chaos that mucks the backing current.
This song exudes a cool factor – it throws the listener into a state of wonderment and contemplation. I found myself connecting most to the way that the words felt so genuine, and the backing music so destructive and euphoric at the same time. Isn’t that the way life feels sometimes? Something is going your way, but something isn’t and drops off entirely. You can’t quite feel whole. In the music bed, a melodic electric guitar meanders its way around the song, only to take aim and make a grand impact. I was surprised to hear that guitar, mainly because gone are the days of the guitar solo (or are they past us?). It really works in “Pieces” and the electric guitar riffs really were the icing on the cake. I never felt like I was being reeled in under false pretenses. The synth, the vocals and the steady percussion are all pulled together by song’s end. What felt like it didn’t quite jive or make sense at the beginning, melted together and opened as if it were an awakening by song’s end.
Daccarett is a dynamic force. She graduated from Instituto Marangoni in Paris, as well as the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. Her fierce style, and combination of creating art that is both aesthetic and sonically immersive is turning heads. Daccarett’s “Pieces” spins a whole new storyline and sound palette that can’t be duplicated. She’s truly original and this song is a stunning wave of light, complexity and perplexing rhythms. If you’re seeking a song that takes you to a far off, fantastical world and gets to listen to a comforting voice, then “Pieces” is for you.
