The actor admitted the proposed project was put aside after the creative team failed to find the right story
A Game of Thrones spin-off centered around Jon Snow is no longer in development, actor Kit Harington told Screen Rant in a new interview.
Harington said the project is currently “off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough.” He continued: “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
There was never a big announcement about the potential spin-off, with news of it only trickling out in 2022 when GoT creator George R.R. Martin confirmed some swirling rumors. On his website, Martin wrote that the show was “in development,” but emphasized that HBO had not given it a green light.
When asked for an update on the show, Harington spoke of his own reticence to discuss it previously for pretty much the same reason. “I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development,” he said. “I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.”
At the time Martin first teased the Jon Snow show, he noted three other spin-offs that were also in development — and one did get the green light from Warner Bros. Discovery last year. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, will be set a century before the events of Game of Thrones, and center around Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. While the show received a straight-to-series order, there’s still no word on casting or a timeframe for when it’ll be released.
In the meantime, GoT fans will have the second season of the prequel series, House of the Dragon to look forward to. Two dueling trailers for the show were released last month, and the first episode will premiere June 16.
